5/23

5/8 - shot given at 3:00 position of right thigh. went well but had a little bruise for 8 days. i guess that happens.

5/15 - shot given at 3:00 position of left thigh. went well. no bruise. for some reason i was real slow about the whole thing. i inserted the needle slow (said ouch) , pushed the plunger slow (said ouch) , and pulled the needle out slow (said ouch). Courtney laughed, saying 'why did you do that so slow?'. it was pretty funny.

5/23 - i think i'm doing my shot today. if not i'll do it tomorrow. 6:00 position of right thigh.

i just wanted to get my shot positions noted before i forget them.

5/7

Courtney and I were in W Palm Beach from Wednesday noon until Sunday morning. A much needed escape, we had a great time. Courtney had weird sinus issues at the beginning of the week. It really sucked, mainly for her of course. But it made her think that she was talking real loud. She was "whispering", well, talking normally. So that was nice. The beach was incredible, made, primarily of finely ground seashells, not sand. Crystal clear water. I mean you could see your feet when in up to your knees. No man-o-wars so that was good. Lots of money in Palm Beach. Benzs, Royles, Bentleys. And me and Court walking 30+ minutes, across a bridge, down Royal Palm Blvd, in flip-flops, me with an opened shirt, shades, rainbow unbrella, and fly hat and Court with beach bag, sarong, shades, and fly hat. We had some nice dinners, some good drinks, met some nice people. It was a good time.

We were back in the burgh Sunday around noon. Thanks Mom and Dad for watching Basil and dropping/picking us up from the airport.

Now it was my turn to have screwed up sinuses. I blew my nose and sneezed constantly from Sunday afternoon until Monday evening. My coworkers made me leave work early on Monday cause they thought I had "the swine" as they called it. Never had allergies like this before. Felt like there were cactus needles in my nose. I've been getting better each day and am now pretty much back to normal.

I did my shot Sunday evening. Shot was given at 12:00 position in left thigh. I hydrated pretty well on Sunday and my shot went well.

I have been noticing minor flareups. I think I have been for a month or so but was trying to ignore them. They are very small but they are there every once in a while. It's like I can tell 'there was a signal crossing.' I'm not too worried about it. My medicine was to help prevent progression of my disease not to repair what's been done. However, I think they are getting close to a pill that also rebuilds the nerve tissue.

So it's 5/7. I am being realistic here. I don't think I'm going to be ready for the MS 150 to Erie. It's the weekend of 6/6. I'm still into biking and doing a ride; I just want to be properly prepared. Maybe I'll be ready for the NC ride. If I'm not I'll be disappointed.

MULAMULAMULAMULA!!!

monday 4/27. my first day of mula! mandatory unpaid leave of absence. i am, for all intensive purposes ;) , unemployed. as a matter of fact i am going to file in the "hopes" that i get some mula later in the year, God forbid. if i get 2 weeks of mula i'll get an unemployment check. but, i gotta tell ya, it feels great. being unemployed for a week ain't so bad. i'm feeling extra super swell too cause i know that Courtney and i will be in west palm beach at noon on wednesday. this is our mula/graduation getaway celebration. i cannot wait. we've been looking up where we're going to eat, snorkeling places, places in the shade, etc. it's going to be great.

friday 4/24 - gave shot at 12:00 position on right thigh. this one hurt for some reason. could have been that i didn't take ibuprofen, wasn't overly hydrated, or the lighting. the lighting in our appt sucks. the thigh is still a little sore today. eh, i'll get over it.

saturday 4/25 - went to the track today. i started around 10:30 and road for 13 miles. then i took a break - i stretched and had a banana and water. then i road another 13 miles. i stretched and had a banana, protein bar, and water. it was around 12:30. that's all i could muster. i need to get padded shorts.

sunday 4/26 - we took Basil to Frick park around 10:30. it was hot. we thought it would be a little cooler at the bottom of Frick but it wasn't. it was dry and hot. and we hiked around until 12:00. it would be awesome if humans could just plop down in a muddy stream to cool off.

all this sunshine and warmth has done me good. mula came at a perfect time too.

4/19

thurs 4/9 - road bike trainer for 30 minutes. that's a pretty good workout. no eye twitching.
fri 4/10 - shot night. shot given in 9:00 position of right thigh.
sat 4/11 - went on my 1st bike ride with friend from work, Betty. we started at bike shop on rte 8 and road out to the butler airport. total of 31+ miles; about 3.5 hours. man, it kicked my butt. the cars that passed us weren't jerks so that was good. and the thing about riding a bike on the road is you have to hug the right edge of the road which generally is the worst part of the road. lots of potholes and sinking areas. but overall a good experience.
wed 4/15 - pens win. up 1-0 on flyers.
thurs 4/16 - after work go to the track. ride for just under an hour. approx 14 miles. good ride. pulled a groin or hamstring but it worked itself out fairly quickly. and i definitely need to work on my endurance. need to ride for 2 or 3 hours next time i go to the track. i can't really do that during the week so i guess next weekend.
fri 4/17 - pens win in ot. up 2-0 on flyers.
sat 4/18 - did shot today at 8pm. give at 9:00 position of left thigh. went well. no blood or side affects.

4/7

monday. one day after the bug attack, my eye is about 85% better. it's amazing how fast the eye heals. after work i rode on the bike trainer for a little over 20 minutes. sweat much more than one would think. i was dripping. and i noticed that my left eye started twitching again. Courtney and i came up with the hypothesis that excercise (physical exertion) causes my eye to twitch. it happened when i was going to the gym 3-4 times a week. it hasn't happened for the past 2+ weeks when i was not going to the gym. we're monitoring this behavior.

today my eye is 98%.

4/5/09

friday 3pm - the bike shop called to inform me that my bike was ready! hooray

friday 9pm - did my shot at the 6:00 position in my left thigh. went well.

saturday am - 3 pgh police were killed in stanten hts, not 10 minutes from our house and less than 5 minutes from homes of family. i'm not a huge fan of cops but you have to respect them for what they do. it was surreal, knowing that this was happening so close to us; that the cop that flew past us on highland ave was on his way to this scene while we were on our way to Courtney's parents house. we stopped for coffee a block from their house. that's where we first saw the news about the standoff. why the hell does a 23 year old have an artillery and a flack jacket?!?

saturday noon - i pick up my bike. Courtney's dad, Mike, joins me. purchases include my bike, a computer (to track time, distance, etc), an underseat bag, a lock, a spare intertube, a helmet, and a rack for the car. Mike loans me his "rear wheel of the bike holder upper" so i can train indoors.

saturday 2pm - i head to the 1/2 mile track near the police station on washington blvd. the track is awesome. it is really a lot of fun. there are uphill and downhill parts, banks and bends. and lots of wind. i ride for an hour and estimate i've done about 12 miles. the flags at the station are at half mast. i see ambulance drivers and police officers standing in the parking lot. i wonder what they're feeling. i decide that i'm going to walk over when i'm done and tell them how sorry i am. a little after 3 i walk over with my bike. there is noone outside anymore. there was a 3pm press conference.

sunday 1pm - i drop Courtney off at the gym and i head to the track. i go around once, feel sore (my butt hurts) but good. i'm going to match yesterday's performance, at least. i am just finishing my first lap and a damn bug flies into my eyeball. instead of freaking out i hit my brakes, remember that my feet are in clips, unclip them, and drag myself to the side of the track. the next hour sucks big time. i finally make it back to the car where i continue to force my eye to water up. i wait for a while before driving home. i did get to see the d and d'ers (dungeons and dragons) prepare for battle in the field by the track.

it is now 4pm. my eye is better but still messed up pretty good. nothing came out of it so either the bug bounced off or my body is going to absorb it. i think that it just scratched the hell out of my eye. on the bright side i hooked my bike up to the "rear wheel off the ground holder upper" and tested it out. that thing will be great for training.

i'm pretty fired up about the bike. i just have to wear sunglasses or something from now on.

tentative date of next shot: friday 4/10 in the 9:00 position of my right thigh.

3/28

did my shot last night. shot given at 6:00 position in my right thigh. i must have hit a blood vessel cause i bled pretty good. other than that it went well. no side effects. giving myself a shot still pretty much sucks though. Courtney and i were sitting in the dining room getting ready to do our shots (this used to mean tequila or jameson, now it means avonex and enbrel) and we just looked at the table and started laughing. on it were syringes, alcohol wipes, bandages, ice pack. how did we get here? it's a good thing the police have not barged in during shot time.

again a gym-less week this past week. my gym membership is up at the end of the month anyway so i'm pretty much over the gym.

i found a bike this week! i'm totally stocked about that. i went to one of those "bike shop on the side of the road" type places that my friend from work recommended. she got her first bike there which was a used bike but much cheaper than the newer bikes. fine for a first bike. so that's what i did too. i got a used schwinn. a perfect fit. it's a little heavier than the newer bikes but not too bad. and what do i know? - i haven't ridden a bike since i got a driver's license. a few extra lbs might mean a lot to a racer but i don't think i'll know the difference. Allen, the bike guy, is going to do some upgrades for me. adding on new peddles, moving the gear shifters, adding on a 3rd gear in the front (i'll have 24 gears i think), a new seat. i think it's going to work out just fine for me. plus i'm going to end up spending less than half what i was planning on spending. maybe a 1/3. my bike will be ready for me some time next week.

i was thinking of joining my buddy from work in the MS ride in NC but then i started thinking, why drive to NC, ride for 150 miles, and drive home. that seems like quite an undertaking for my first biking experience. i've decided that i'm going to do the MS 150 that goes from cranberry to erie. so don't be surprised if i hit you up to sponser me. the thing is, the MS 150 is june 6th or something so i need to start training asap. anyone want to join me?

next shot to be give at 6:00 position in left thigh. tentative date: april 3.
